It is one thing to migrate from one place to another as a child. But what happens when this migration occurs to one as an adult?
Inspired by John Rwothomack’s move from Northern Uganda to Northern England at age 11, Away From Home is a dissection of migration and marriage and the struggle that married couples encounter when trying to integrate into that society while keeping that bond intact. The show will cover the experiences of couples whose relationships have culminated in divorce, discontent and often the return of one spouse to their home country.
The show will examine the role that government policies, religious doctrines and legal arbitrations play in the cultural phenomenon and in the process exposing the misogyny that is rife within these systems.
The show will be a collaboration between British and Sub-Saharan musicians and theatremakers merging storytelling practices and folk music.
